Western Digital WD TV HD, DTS downmixing

February 10, 2009 – 14:44

wdfmybook_home_1cLast week I bought the Western Digital WD TV HD with a WD My Book Home Edition (1TB) external USB harddisk. I must say this truly is a wonderfull combination for me. It plays every media file I threw at it, even those encoded with insane bitrates. The number of file formats supported is huge, and still growing with new firmware updates coming.

File Formats Supported
Music – MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF, MKA
Photo – JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, BMP, PNG
Video -MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4, Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H.264),
MTS, TP, TS
Playlist – PLS, M3U, WPL
Subtitle -SRT (UTF-8), SMI, SUB, ASS, SSA

wdfwdtvBut  even this little media monster has one big disadvantage, there is no DTS decoding. The DTS signal is bitsreamt trough the optical output so if you own a DTS surround receiver with optical-in you will be able to enjoy DTS audio with your movies. If you are connected trough HDMI only, as I am, you will here nothing.

Who’s to blaim for this? Western Digital? I don’t know. For only 99 euro’s this thing is pretty cheap and DTS certificates and licenses are very expensive so it probably was the only thing WD could do to keep the WD TV HD as cheap as it is now. I have sent an enquiry to Western Digital if DTS to stereo/AC-3 downmixing will be a possible feature for new firmware upgrades to come. Untill now they haven’t replied to my question.

wdfwdtv_backAfter doing some reading on the WD TV HD it seems it is based on the SMP8635LF chip from Sigma Designs. This chip happens to be used in other Linux based devices like the HD200 (SageTV), Teac HDRM7250, TVIX6500 and the Popcorn Hour A-110.

The Popcorn Hour may be of interest, as it has a feature for downmixing DTS, and reportedly Popcorn Hour Linux modules were imported succesfully in the WD TV HD system.

Another hint of DTS downmixing being possible is in the firmware microcode that is used for the audio processing on the Sigma DSP:

/lib/firmware/xrpc_xload_audio_ucode_SMP8634_2.8.3.0_facsprod.mips.nodts.bin

So it looks like DTS was specifically disabled. Maybe it’s possible to just swap the audio_ucode with one that supports DTS (downmixing), like the Popcorn Hour. Altough this might be blocked by some encryption scheme. I don’t have the technical knowledge to answer this question. But I know that ISTAR doesn’t have DTS decoding neither but some of the users used the Popcornhour firmware and they can now successfully decode DTS. Since WD uses the same Sigma chip, I’m guessing there’s a chance. Still, we need confirmation from a person who has technical knowledge.wdfwdtv_box

So is there anybody reading this with a lot of linux knowledge, serial access to a WD TV HD and willing to help a lot of people? Please let me know. I have Ubuntu installed on a virtual machine but I haven’t got the knowledge and serial access. I’d also would be way too concerned about bricking my device. The guys over at the AVS-forum haven’t got DTS decoding or downmixing working but they sure are making progress. They have reportedly got the WD TV HD running with an ethernet connection using a WiFi USB device!

I know the simple solution would be to buy a DTS surround receiver with optical in, but damn those things are still expensive. The best solution for me would be the HTX-22HD Home Theatre Package System. Since i do not want 5 speakers. Quality 2.1 will do for me. This system comes standard as 2.1 and has all the features you would like for watching high definition video/audio. E.g. TrueHD, DTS HD, HDMI 1.3 in/out, optical in/out. But untill I have the 330 euros for this great audio system I would like my WD TVHD to downmix my DTS. I’m sure you agree!

Update: I got a response from WD “

  2. We’ve had the same problem :( I have a lot of .MKV movies with DTS audio. So I really need to buy a receiver, I hope WD will update its firmware and will support DTS surround soon :(

  4. Got this answer about possible downmixing on the WD TV today:

    Dear Eirik,

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.

DTS is not and will not be included strictly because of the licensing cost.

    This sucks ass

  5. Ouch! That answer hurts. I was really hoping WD would listen to everybody on the net screaming for this feature. I guess we have to keep converting to AC3 or go out and buy a DTS receiver with optical in.

  6. pls tell me why WD dose not support arabic subtitle
    and DTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    WHY WHY WHY ???????????????????

  7. I have this problem also, but I really think it will work itself out with unofficial firmware in the near future.

  8. why not consider the EG-M34A? Coming month firmware will upgrade it to have DTS downmixing ability and all the networking goodies are there already. Plus it is priced competitively. See here: http://egreathd.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=61

  10. I hope they will release an update for this matter

notice the last post by ann is link for A virus

By truth finder on Jul 6, 2009

  11. @truth finder,

I don’t think WD will ever release a firmware update which will address this matter. This is because the micro code controlling the Sigma SoC isn’t open source and wasn’t written by Western Digital itself. So even if they would be in posession of this code and would be okay with releasing it, they aren’t allowed to do so.

PS. Ann’s suggested alternative solution is not a virus. I have double checked it… Until someone proves me wrong the link stays. (Thanks Ann :D )

  12. WD Really need to bite the bullet and cough up for DTS, or get the downmixing running since the net is covered with people screaming for this feature.
It’s losing them sales; I would have had no problem telling friends to get the little black box, but not now.

Cheap or not, if it doesn’t play the popular option for blu-ray sound, it aint worth shit.

  13. pitty. i bought a new wd tv hd last day and noticed its not playing dts audio. Damn. i’m so angry.

By suat on Aug 23, 2009

  14. I have just bought one after reading all the great reviews and cheap price….but i too soon found out the hard way although it plays most stuff it wont play dts..so bang goes all the mkv dts video conversions i cant use!…..

Next time i will do more research!….this thing will be useless in the near future…..everything is now DTS!….WD will change when their sales are impacted….sadly that wont help any of us!

  15. Shame, I paid 100$ for this little box and now I have to spend additional 300$ on a receiver that supports DTS just so i can watch my HD movie collection with sound.

If WD is not going to fix this issue they should at least post on their website in big red letters “DOS NOT SUPPORT DTS” I bet 90% of people would never bought theirs if they knew that from the start.

By Pete on Sep 16, 2009

  16. Looks like WD decided to go the way of any big company and release a next generation product which will for sure be more expensive but at least i will support DTS.

  17. for me, it’s not a disadvantage at all. watching movies in stereo doesn’t make much sense! ;)

i need to be surrounded by the sound :D

  18. Hi Guys,

SUpport you entirely about the need to have DTS downmixing support. Hopefully WD will see sense and provide it via a firmware upgrade in the future.

But for the time being, there are a set of handy tools readily available to decode DTS in MKV’s to a 2 channel simple AC3.

To decode DTS in other containers you could look at using mediacoder with a “copy video” function.

    Regards

  19. Still not working… :(
I bought just 4-6 weeks ago and did some updates, but nothing…

  20. I am totally lucky, my older Kenwood Amp has DTS…so just connected the optical after scratching my head over audio…and it works like a charm…

Too bad my upscaling DVD player now is collecting dust…lol..

But the WD TV player rocks… :-)
