Hacking Thompson Speedtouch routers with default security settings. Crack wep/wpa keys within minutes.

This hack has been known for a while, since it was first discovered back in April by Kevin Devine. The reason of posting it now is that today I found this really simple executable to get possible security keys within seconds. It’s not actually cracking the wep/wpa key but this program does the same thing the official thompson installer does when creating the default security settings for your modem/router.

Speedtouch modems are very common in Europe, as far as I know ISP orange is using them in Spain, Brittish Telecom in Great Brittain and KPN in the Netherlands. You’ll recognise these modems with default security settins by there SSID (name). It should be something like “SpeedTouch188DBB”.

How to get the default wep/wpa keys:

  1. download the program speedtouchkey here.
  2. copy the file to a folder of your choice (e.g. c:/temp), open a command screen (start –> run –> cmd <return>) and navigate to this folder.
  3. Let’s say you found a speedtouch device with SSID: SpeedTouch188DBB, enter the following command in the command prompt. speedtouchkey -i 188DBB -s and press <return>.
  4. Your now prompted with possible keys according to the year of manufactury.

In this particular case the WPA-key is: 763FF260D1 which is the first possible key for 2006.

I tested it myself and found three speedtouch modem/routers with default security settings. The first two I tried were a straight succes so I didn’t even bother to try the third. Hope you like it, but don’t abuse it. Anyone who found or made a web and/or a symbian version of this program please contact me.

    Err, the hack was first discovered by a Dutch hacker in 2005 and other people just got air of it (I am using this little program, which was a Linux program originally, ever since he, my dad, wrote it.

    Note: The algorithm was recently changed for the new Experiabox, but dad got it cracked already.

    I always try to credit the original authors/coders. In this particular case i wasn’t aware who exactly was the orignial author.I did run into the original Linux program but that didn’t work out for me because I don’t use *nix systems a lot. If i really need it, I run the Ubuntu livecd. Anyways the purpose of my blog is making stuff available i’ve been searching for or working on myself for a long time.

    PS. I knew about the new “experia” algorithm, but I thought the executable posted was already working with these new modems.

  16. I’m sorry Bruno, but even after reading your reply three times I can’t make anything of it. Do you mean you want to hack the MAC security settings so your own device will be allowed? If so, it should be easy using the method above. Think of it, the hack in this particular example only works when people have used the default security settings. So router configuration login is probably default to! If thats the case, just go in to the router and add the mac adress you would like to be accepted. I wouldn’t use your real MAC adress if I were you, since it’s illegal in some countries. Read my blog entry on how to change your mac adress on a window machine:

  27. jimbo, go to your router config page. This is a web interface for your router configuration. Change your SSID and/or security settings.

    commandprompt –> ipconfig –> standard gateway = your routers address

  28. One maybe-dumb question. What’s the point of changing the MAC address?

    You change your MAC address to something else, and your card then has that MAC… and can just as easily be identified and located as if you used your old original one.

    In other words, I don’t see the difference between it being for example 1A:1A:1A:1A:1A:1A or 2B:2B:2B:2B:2B:2B.

  36. TouchSpeedCalc is a Python S60 version of the tool which uses lookup tables (for speed, despite 36Mo size) to find any default SpeedTouch router password.
    Works great on Nokia E51 (Symbian S60 3rd edition FP1)
    You can also lookup the default password for your SpeedTouch router here, just enter the SSID :)

  37. Lol it works even with Speedtoutch routers what is selled by “Elion Enterprises” with iinternet startup and IPtv package in estonia ( up to 2008) Havent tested 2009 routers snice haent seen any yet.
    With some limitations it works also wth thomson routers some witch name is Thomson(6xdigitcode).

    But yeah very impressive tool if you want test security and look how stupit your neigbhours are :) .
    Near my home has like 10 + Different Speedtoutch + some thomson routers with wifi enabled.
    So had lot of fun. ^^
    Anyway one neigbhour was very mart :D He made shomehow his router works so that i see all web pages mirrored :O.
